Septic service in Kalispell and Evergreen
Septic help for the county seat and the unincorporated neighborhoods just to its northeast.
Kalispell is the Flathead County seat, a city of 24,558 at the 2020 census sitting about seven miles north of Flathead Lake. Evergreen borders it on the northeast, about four miles from downtown along U.S. 2 and 93. Evergreen is unincorporated, had 8,149 residents in 2020, and lies between the Whitefish River on its west side and the Flathead River along its east edge.
City sewer or septic?
Most homes inside Kalispell city limits are on municipal sewer. Septic is common on the edges of town, on acreage west toward Kila and Smith Lake, and in rural pockets around Evergreen. If a sewer line is readily available within 200 feet of a property, county rules generally require connecting to it, so new builds near the city should check that before designing a septic system.
Why groundwater gets attention here
A study commissioned by the Flathead Basin Commission and presented by researchers from the University of Montana's Flathead Lake Biological Station sampled 17 shallow wells in the Evergreen area and found traces of contaminants, including household products that can pass through wastewater. Health and DEQ officials said that didn't mean county drinking water was unsafe, and recommended private well owners test yearly for coliform bacteria and nitrates. Keeping septic systems pumped and working is part of protecting that shallow water.
